Be Present.

The most uncomfortable feeling I’ve experienced would have to be facing the unknown. Seriously, the restraint of not being able to decipher what’s to come is simply annoying. The thing is, we cannot control everything. We make all of these immaculate plans for our lives, all the while God is laughing because His plan is THEE PLAN, and His plan for us supersedes anything that we could ever think or imagine for ourselves. Whenever I am faced with the uncanny feeling of approaching the unknown, I take a step back and remind myself that faith has and will forever carry me through… It’s always been that way. Not to mention the fact that if we don’t get out of our own way, nothing can be. PERIOD.

In the mist of this perplexed space, I have to remind myself to be present because it forces me to realize that this very precious moment is the only thing that I can be absolutely certain of. So whenever your mind starts to ponder over the future, or you find yourself stuck in a frenzy due to your past, remind yourself to be present and let your faith guide you through the rest.“Breathe. Let go. And remind yourself that this very moment is the only one you know you have for sure.” – Oprah Winfrey

Until next time……Peace & blessings to all of you.

One Thing I Know for Sure ….

I am an educated Black woman, and to some that’s a threat. My ancestors shed blood, sweat and tears for me to be able to exude such prestige, which essentially reflects the fact that I am a force to be reckoned with. Every since the days of slavery, constraining Blacks from an education was used as a method to quell slave rebellion, and that denial only intensified our urge to learn. Because of principals such as W.E.B DuBois and Booker T. Washington’s many sacrifices to continue the torch of wisdom—although they had conflicting philosophies regarding Black education—I have the possibility to be considered a candidate for a Master of Science degree in Strategic Communications from Troy University. For that I am thankful and forever indebted to those before me. In the midst of my uncertainty, I know one thing for sure… I can be denied everything I strive for, but the ability to learn is not one of them. With that notion, I would like to dedicate this opportunity, this degree and my overall literacy to those who paved the way for Blacks to attain a formal education and beat all odds that were devised for their omission. Education is one of our most powerful weapons, and with it we have the power to change the world!

Still I Rise.

You may write me down in history
With your bitter, twisted lies,

You may trod me in the very dirt
But still, like dust, I’ll rise.

Does my sassiness upset you?
Why are you beset with gloom?

Cause I walk like I’ve got oil wells
Pumping in my living room.

Just like suns and like moons,
With the certainty of tides,

Just like hopes springing high,
Still I’ll rise.

Did you want to see me broken?
Bowed head and lowered eyes?
Shoulders falling down like teardrops,
Weakened by my soulful cries?

Does my haughtiness offend you?
Don’t you take it awful hard
Cause I laugh like I’ve got gold mines
Diggin’ in my own back yard.

You may shoot me with your words,
You may cut me with your eyes,
You may kill me with your hatefulness,
But still, like air, I’ll rise.

Does my sexiness upset you?
Does it come as a surprise
That I dance like I’ve got diamonds
At the meeting of my thighs?

Out of the huts of history’s shame
I rise

Up from a past that’s rooted in pain
I rise

I’m a black ocean, leaping and wide,
Welling and swelling I bear in the tide.

Leaving behind nights of terror and fear
I rise

Into a daybreak that’s wondrously clear
I rise
Bringing the gifts that my ancestors gave,
I am the dream and the hope of the slave.

I rise
I rise
I rise.

Until next time, peace and blessings to you all.

Do you ever take out the time to just meditate on how far you have come and the things you have accomplished thus far? As I sit next to my window with the sun beaming on my face, I cannot help but to be anything other than thankful. Thankful because this little black girl from Mobile, Alabama, is living her best life and sharing her passion with others like you. Not many people can say that. It is so easy to journey through life thinking that our hard work and dedication is the cause of our glory, but without Christ bestowing upon us his wisdom, knowledge and understanding we would have and be nothing. By being thankful, it allows us to step outside of ourselves and give credit to others because a multitude of people have contributed to us in ways that we can’t even imagine. Friends, family, Ms. Linda next door who grabs your packages for you when you’re out —thank you so much Ms. Linda ♥— all the way down to the people that we exchange smiles with while walking down the street, have a benefaction in our glory.
A Thankful Heart Is A Happy Heart
So, when the troubles of life begin to weigh you down, combat them with words of gratitude and affirmation! Start looking at the glass as half full, because things could be a lot worse, instead of empty! I challenge you to go to war with negative thoughts by using your light and positivity as your armory to fight your way out of those dark places. Instead of saying, “I really wish things were easier,” say, “I am thankful for the way things are because nothing easy is worth having, and in the end I know it will all be worth it!” Now, I know that all of this is easily said than done; however, I am speaking solely from experience. Once you start letting gratitude guide you, you can take a step back and admire the beauty of perseverance. It’s a beautiful portrait once you put the brush down and step away from the grumble.

A Thankful Heart Is A Happy Heart

As always, thank you so much for reading. Please share your thoughts with me in the comment section below, and I will see you all in my next post.

Until next time……Peace & blessings to all of you.

No Pressure, No Diamonds.

No Pressure, No Diamonds.

Diamonds are formed when carbon is under extreme pressure in the earth. Without pressure a diamond would just be carbon in a lesser form such as graphite.
No Pressure, No Diamonds.Without the trials and tribulations of life, where would we be? Lost…completely. We would have no sagacity to pilot our lives, and the motivation to excel would be at an all time low. “No pressure, no diamonds,” a quote by the great writer Thomas Carlyle, is my mantra. Whenever I’m in an eerie place, I meditate on this phrase to focus my energy on a singular, positive thing that is current in my life – doing whatever I can to shake the strain. This quote is an unambiguous reminder that without affliction we would not be who we are today. Look at it this way, inhibition is essential to strength and growth, and without it we’re merely a drifting creation.  Remember that the next time the humdrum of life sets in.

No Pressure, No Diamonds.

No Pressure, No Diamonds.o Pressure, No Diamonds.

No Pressure, No Diamonds.

No Pressure, No Diamonds.

It’s a piece of cake to be progressive when things are smooth sailing; however, it’s braving improbable challenges that show us what we are truly made of…….DIAMONDS.

Mother-Daughter GOALS.

Calvin Klein has creatively paired Lisa Bonnet and Zoë Kravitz, the ultimate mother daughter duo, to star in their 2016 Watches + Jewelry campaign. The photographs feature these beauties, who could easily pass as sisters, happily walking along the beach sprinkling #blackgirlmagic as they stride.

The photographs, shot by Cass Bird, also include model Xiao Wen Ju, actor Kim Woo Bin, Will Peltz, and Kenya Kinski Jones, the daughter of Quincy Jones.

Rocking their signature braids and locs style, the duo both embody a chic, relaxed look as Bonet trances in a long black, cotton dress while Kravitz stupors in a sheer dress with solid black under garments .

Zoë, the model/singer/ actress AND daughter of rockstar Lenny Kravitz, was the face of the Fall 2015 campaign for Alex Bittar’s jewelry line, Lucite. As a continued fashion prima donna, she was also a part of Balenciaga’s latest campaign and walked in their Spring 2016 fashion show.

Here’s an accompanying video for the campaign below. Check it out!

Falling Face FORWARD.

For some time now, I have been in this space where I am only accepting positivity from every corner of my life! We have the power to do that you know..? The aura of good energy and affirmative willingness that I carry and desire to pass on to others, solely comes from this place.

See, forward is not only a locomotion, it is also a mindset. Not only did I move forward physically, but I moved forward mentally by rearranging some people, places and things in my life when I adopted this mentality.

It all came about when I noticed that I was seriously committed to certain perimeters of my life, but I was neglecting important areas that really needed nourishing. When I hit rock bottom in my uncertainty and was completely unsure of what to do, I declared that the only way to go from that petrifying place was forward, and that’s exactly what I did.

Now, it is so much easier to understand…life happens. Things will not always happen the way that we desire them to. However, when we are engulfed in positivity and have an onward mindset, things have a way of working themselves out for the better.

It’s not about what you do, how you do it nor the speed in which you get it done. None of those things matter because forward is forward. Curate an ambience filled with love, light and positivity to stay afloat while moving forward, and I guarantee that once you adopt an onward mindset everything you touch will become progressive!

“Even if you fall on your face, you’re still moving forward.” – Victor Kiam

Until next time, peace & blessings to you all.

I Prefer……..Me.

Isn’t it a little presumptuous to think that one has it all together because of what you physically see?  I myself, amongst others, have fallen short to this execution multiple times over. Looking into someone’s life and thinking that they are perfect because their social media handle says so only leads to a false sense of you.

ShaMyra SylvesterShaMyra Sylvester

Being that today is the first day of winter, and autumn has so graciously left us, I have decided to let something fall away too. What’s that you ask…? “Covetousness: feeling or showing a very strong desire for something that you do not have and especially for something that belongs to someone else; marked by inordinate desire for wealth or possessions or for another’s possessions.” —– Merriam-Webster Dictionary

ShaMyra Sylvester

It’s an unalloyed, involuntary characteristic that we all share, some more than others, but it has got to go! From my life at least… I vow to no longer peep into someone else’s lifestyle and “wish I had their hair, shoes, style, etc.” We are all blessed with our very own, uniquely designed pieces that formulate perfectly into a masterpiece.

ShaMyra Sylvester

No one has it all together! Even I may look like it, which there is absolutely nothing wrong with confidence, but I don’t. It’s all about self-assurance and making a valiant effort in whatever you do.

ShaMyra Sylvester

When you find yourself in this habitual rut, try affirming yourself!  You will be surprised at how you blossom into a beautifully poised and assertive being as it’s proven to cause the subconscious mind to strive and to work on your behalf and to make positive statements come true. I hope that this is helpful to at least one of you. Until next time…….

Happy Holidays!

As this year comes to an end, I have been very reflective on the goals that I set at the beginning, which brings me to this post in particular. Often times we get so caught up in the motions of life that we become stagnant when we know that there is more that we should be pursuing. This could be the book you said you would write, that blog you said you wanted to start, a new business venture, degree, or something as simple as eating healthier!

Earlier this year, I unknowingly lost myself. I was making more money than ever before, I was in graduate school, and for me that was enough. However being in a new city, with new friends, I slowly began to drift away from my spirituality, became motionless in my career, and completely ignored my creative sense. My goals were far and distant from being accomplished because I was distracted. Realistically, I was conforming to the standards and laws of the things that were around me. Then it hit me! All of a sudden I hated my job, I wanted to start a new blog (SSquared.), upgrade my energy, get back to the creative me, and surround myself with positive people, you know the ones who just get it….. And I did just that! I JUMPED. IMG_2769

And I must say, I could not be happier. All it took was prayer and a little mustard seed faith!

On Tuesday, before Thanksgiving, my manager called me into his office. He said, “Myra, sit down. Why are you working here?” Taken aback by his very direct question, I responded saying I honestly don’t know. He then said, “You are awesome to have around, but I know that you are unhappy here. You are way too creative and smart to be in this office. Aren’t you about to finish you masters in communications?” I replied, yes as I twiddled my thumbs and looked down at my shoes. “Look at me,” he said. “I am cutting the cord like your parents did. I am letting you go. Now, I am going to pay you until February, so you better find a job in your field by then! If you cannot, then you are always welcome back, but I am confident that you will!” I was completely bewildered as he hugged me and said that he will miss me. He ended the conversation saying, “Here’s my card. Please keep in touch. Oh, and Roll Tide! I’m headed to Atlanta for the game! We better win the championship!”

As I packed my office, all I could do was think to myself… WHAT JUST HAPPENED? I had been applying to jobs for months and months receiving no feedback, so at this point I was worried frantically. Then as I thought back to the goals that I had for my career and my sole purpose for moving to The District, I stopped and prayed. A calm like no other overtook me as I said to myself, “Girl, you’ve got this!”

The very next day, out of the blue, I had a phone interview as I was traveling home to Alabama. On Friday after Thanksgiving, I had 2 phone interviews with different companies all in my field. The following week, I had 3 interviews in one day, and then another interview with another company the following day.IMG_2778IMG_2777

When you trust that God has your back and allow him to actually have your back, that is when things will begin to unfold!! It brings me great joy to say that I got EVERY job that I interviewed for! Each of them in my field of study, very close to my home, and making more money than I had before. This is everything that I took to God in prayer! I am so amazed at how this all played out over a two week time span.

All you have to do is JUMP, and watch Him keep you a float! He will do it if you get rid of the clutter and debris in your life, and let Him work…. I pray that this inspires you all to tackle your goals head on in the new year, and do not be afraid to clear up some inapposite space in your life. Then JUMP! He’ll make sure that you land where he sees fit!

Peace & blessings to you all.

A very stylish piece from Hunter Original, the slide was first presented at their recent London Fashion Week runway show. In new, solid colour for the season, the style features the iconic logo, split across each foot, and the signature tread design, inspired by the Original boot. Brand consistency at its best.

A Different Perspective

What is your definition of success? Is it measured by tangible results or valuables?

Processed with VSCOcam with hb2 preset

If success to you is determined by physical assets and accomplishments, which I deemed as success at one point, try altering your perspective. It is so easy, especially with the digital age, to compare and contrast your success with that of others, and this can be very daunting and toxic to your journey as well as self awareness.

Everyone was destined to travel an intimate, meticulous designed path, so learn to admire and appreciate your personal expedition to success. After all, it is you who worked so hard to be where you are, so if you are unsatisfied with the results, try working a little harder or simply changing your POV.

“Success is to be measured not so much by the position that one has reached in life as by the obstacles which he has overcome.”
– Booker T. Washington
